A New Chapter for the American Foundry Society: Welcoming Justin Scott as CEO

The North American metalcasting industry is entering a significant period of transition and renewal. As the sector continues to navigate technological shifts and global economic changes, the American Foundry Society (AFS) has officially announced a leadership succession that will shape the organization’s direction for years to come.


Justin Scott, PhD, CAE, has been named the next Chief Executive Officer of AFS. He will succeed Doug Kurkul, who is retiring after a decade of transformative leadership. This transition, which began in early 2026, marks a pivotal moment for the $52 billion metalcasting industry.  


A Legacy of Growth: The Doug Kurkul Era

Since taking the helm in 2016, Doug Kurkul guided AFS through a period of substantial modernization. Under his leadership, the society implemented a robust six-pillar strategic plan that saw corporate membership grow to over 1,100 members. His tenure was defined by a commitment to advocacy in Washington, D.C., the expansion of technical and management programs, and the successful navigation of the industry through the challenges of the early 2020s.  


Meet Justin Scott: Bridging Technology and Leadership

Justin Scott brings a unique blend of technical expertise and association management experience to the role. With a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University, Scott is deeply rooted in the science of metallurgy.  


His professional background includes:

  • Innovation & Analytics Leadership: Most recently, he served as Vice President at the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI), where he focused on AI policy, technology modernization, and industry intelligence.  


  • Technical Stewardship: He previously held leadership roles at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), where he served as Principal Editor of JOM, a leading peer-reviewed journal.  


  • Policy Expertise: Early in his career, he worked in Washington, D.C., supporting federal manufacturing and research initiatives.  


Looking Ahead: The Future of AFS

Scott takes the lead at a time when the AFS is aggressively pursuing high-tech initiatives. The society is currently in the second year of a federally funded Technical Resource Digitization program and is expanding the use of Artificial Intelligence within its vast technical library—the largest of its kind in the world.  


In his initial message to the industry, Scott emphasized the vital role of volunteers and the "foundational" nature of metalcasting in modern society, from energy to infrastructure. His vision involves strengthening the community while driving the innovation necessary for North American foundries to compete on a global scale.

For professionals in the casting sector, this transition signals a continued focus on digital transformation, workforce development, and the integration of advanced materials science into everyday operations.
